The Phoenix have triumphed in extra time 3-1 against the Newcastle Jets and all I can say is what an advertisement for football.
The game had it all. Sweeping movements from one end of the pitch to the other, dramatic extra time and balls firing off the woodwork with uncanny regularity.
The Phoenix dug deep and showed a hell of a lot of guts. A number of the team had traveled with the All Whites to Los Angeles mid week but they were still running strongly during extra time. Sure the skill level wasn't A-Grade at all times but what it lack in skill at times it made up for in buckets full with the drama and atmosphere.
Nearly 33,000 fans turned up to support the boys and is a reflection of the growing popularity of football in this country. I hope NZ Football seizes this golden opportunity to grow the game in this country, there's no doubt it has all the elements of a great sport and there is no wonder it is the most popular game in the world.
